Before proceeding, make sure that replacement is available. Besides this, you are also advised to check whether you have all the vital tools like chisels, screwdrivers, a small hand saw, and a hammer. Initiate your task by unscrewing off the handles on all sides of the hatchway. Then remove the spindle, which runs from the outer side to other side of the gate. After that, your next step is to check out the lock slot for any debris inside. As these tend to affect the locking mechanism. Once you successfully removed spindle, then unscrew the plate that is able to fasten the hatchway lock into the slot. Take a step further to remove malfunctioning one out. After accomplishing all above steps, you now need to get the new ones to slide into the same slot and fix them with screwsinto the hatchway. You can proceed now to replace your old spindle by the new ones, in order to ensure that it is balanced perfectly for your handles and also to be able to turn the lever inside the lock mechanism from both directions.
Once you ensure that your handles and hatchway locks are secured completely, then shut the door and make your lock active to open it. You can then find a clean cloth and use it with sprit to remove any oil marks and make your handle clean and glossy. Your hatchway is now ready to be locked as earlier. You can apply oil on hinges to prevent it from being chirped.
